Thoughts on SDCC 2014 #1

Nerdvana (a.k.a San Diego Comic-Con) is in full-swing this weekend and the teasers and titbits are racing around the Interwebs. Here are my thoughts on some of the reveals and announcements we've seen so far.

First off, we got another glimpse at Ben Affleck as Batman in a new teaser from the set of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

This new direction for the Caped Crusader has already begun to win people over, myself included, but there are always going to be people who don't let up with the Batfleck jokes.

The brooding tone will have Marvel fanboys sniggering as they lap up the comical tone in Guardians of the Galaxy, but I think that each approach has its merits. Personally, I'm excited for the next Superman film and it'd take something truly drastic to shake that. There's been a lot of negativity surrounding the inclusion of Cyborg and Aquaman, but I really don't think they'll be anything more than extended cameos.

Anyway, I'm hoping to see a bit more than just a teaser pic at SDCC this year (teaser trailer/test footage perhaps), so I'll keep my fingers crossed and eyes peeled.

We've also been treated to an onslaught of puzzle posters for Avengers: Age of Ultron that tease mortal peril for the Earth's Mightiest Heroes. So far, we've been shown Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow and new addition Scarlet Witch (see below). Again, I've got my fingers crossed for teaser trailer this weekend.

This is as well as a first poster for Marvel's other 2015 release, Ant-Man. We've been hearing a lot about this one (and for all the wrong reasons) after Edgar Wright was shown the door just over a year from the release date. Peyton Reed has filled his vacated seat in the director's chair.

I'm still loving the 50's B-movie vibe on this one, even if the departure of Wright (my favourite director) shook my confidence in the production a little.

In addition to this, there's been a pretty badass poster for the concluding Hobbit movie, The Battle of the Five Armies - check it out:

You wouldn't believe the amount of hate I've come across for this movie online over the past few days, people apparently enraged by the fact the Hobbit isn't the same as dear old Lord of the Rings. For me, I'm really enjoying the approach Jackson has taken, even if the trilogy will never be held in the same regard as LOTR.

It's likely we'll see the début trailer for The Battle of the Five Armies this weekend. Yaay!

There is still a whole weekend of unveiling to come from SDCC, so I'll more than likely be posting an update with more chatterings soon. Until then, you stay classy San Diego.

  1. Huh, I somehow must have missed the hate for the new Hobbit, what I've seen I'd describe more as indifference. And to an extent I do understand it, as I really wasn't a fan of the first movie all that much. But I really liked the second one quite a bit, so I'm looking forward to part 3 (though it's telling that that poster for The Hobbit features no actual hobbit in sight!).

Also, while I'm sure I'll probably still see it, I, too, have all but completely lost any confidence in Antman after Wright's departure, so I can't say that I'm looking forward to that particular one anymore...

    1. Same! I was so devastated that Wright left, especially after nearly 10 years in development on Antman! He's my favourite director, and coupling that with Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas was going to be awesome! I suspect Marvel wanted to reign in his individual directorial style a little more.

The Hobbit backlash has been mixed, there are no shortage of people who love the series (myself included). I think its more just very vocal people who are very cynical and oddly angry it isn't tonally similar to LOTR. Thanks for commenting Chris!
