Trailer Talk: The Hobbit 3 + more

I wanted to start a new regular feature where I talk about the hottest movie trailers currently circulating, and for alliterative purposes, it only made sense to make it on a Tuesday. Tuesday Trailer Talk - I like the sound of that. I probably (read: definitely) won't be getting to write something every week, but I'll see how I go!

Okay, so we've got some big movies to kick things off this week; naturally, with SDCC just past there have been some exciting trailers hitting the net over the last few days. Today, we're talking The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Women in Film Blogathon

The latest blogathon being hosted by John over at Hitchcock's World takes on the topic of women in film.

A subject rife with fruit for cultural studies nerds, like myself, everywhere. After three years of studying a cultural studies major, you'd think this blogathon would be piss easy. Truth is, it isn't. Sadly, strong female characters in film are few and far between, and those that stand out (Ripley, Sarah Connor, the Bride) have been done to death.

Thoughts on SDCC 2014 #2

Nerdvana (a.k.a San Diego Comic-Con) is in full-swing this weekend and the teasers and titbits are racing around the Interwebs. Here are some more of my thoughts on some of the reveals and announcements we've seen so far.

Film Review: Hercules

"Hercules? Honey, you mean Hunkules!"

A film about Hercules starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and directed by Brett Ratner. If ever there was a recipe for movie disaster, this was it.

Hardly surprising then, that Hercules is kinda lame. It's not (demi) god-awful, but it also isn't as good as it could've been.

Versatile Blogger Award

Something positive to round out the week - Jenna and Allie over at Flick Chicks have been super lovely in nominating myself for the 'Versatile Blogger Award'.

Hooray! Versatility! That's pretty cool, many thanks ladies. After two years of slowing adding to this here blog, I'd like to think there's some versatility to the way I write. Thanks again :)

Anyway, this nomination means I have to pass on the good deed...

Australia vs. Westeros (VOR #21)

Spoiler alert for Game of Thrones Season 4

Yo ho ho and a bottle of Bundy - Australia's tendency for pirating Game of Thrones (and the lack of viable alternatives) makes me wonder: is not paying for content ever justified?

Attack of the Sequels! Blogathon (My Picks)

Yesterday I kicked off my Attack of the Sequels! blogathon, calling on all fellow movie bloggers to pitch up to five movie sequels they want to see. If you want to take part, check out blogathon rules here!

Anyway, here are my picks for five movie sequels I want to see - check them out and let me know what you think!

The closing date for this blogathon is August 7th, so if you want to submit an entry drop it into the comments section of either this post or yesterdays and I'll collate them into one big 'ol post afterwards! Thanks in advance!

Attack of the Sequels! Blogathon

Sequels - love them or hate them, they bombard our screens every month of every year. And boy, do we suffer through some bad sequels - Grown Ups 2, The Smurfs 2, Red 2, Taken 2, A Haunted House 2, Skyline 2 - I mean, who signs off on this stuff?

Of course, the flipside of this is the unrequited sequel, sequels that should, or need, to happen and for some reason or another, have yet to come to fruition.

This blogathon (my first, eeep!) is all about sequels you want to see. Here's how it works:

  1. Pick up to 5 films that you enjoyed, but never got a follow-up film. You can include films that are already sequels (e.g. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army). Doesn't matter how ridiculous it may sound.
  2. Talk about why you'd like to see a sequel to those movies, and where said sequels would take the story.
  3. Please include the blogathon banner (above) somewhere in your post.
  4. The deadline is August 7th - but I'm sure I'll go easy on any late submissions ;)

And that's that! Just post your entry in the comments section of this post (or tweet me a link over on Twitter) and I'll compile a list of everyone's stuff after August 7th. Be sure to pass it along and get as many fellow bloggers involved as you like, the more the merrier. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Good luck, and happy blogging!

Crowdfunded Films (VOR #20)

Want to make in Hollywood without the backing of a major studio? Fear not, the Internet has the answer. Crowdfunding movies may not be anything new, but is it about to take off in a big way? Watch out 20th Century Fox, Kickstarter's coming for ya.

Film Review: Enemy

Enemy is the latest movie from director Denis Villeneuve - starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Melanie Laurent and Sarah Gadon, it's a tense paranoia-filled thriller that will leave your brain whirring for days afterwards.

Snowpiercer Sorrow (VOR #19)

Perth, Western Australia. The city where I live. It's a sleepy sort of place. Plenty of natural beauty. We have Cottesloe Beach and the Swan Valley. There's even some cool touristy places like Hillarys Boat Harbour and the Bell Tower.

One thing we don't however, is Snowpiercer. And that makes me sad. Very sad.

Film Review: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The Planet of the Apes series has come and gone over the years - just ask Mark Wahlberg - but 2011's surprisingly brilliant reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes saw the series swing back into action in style.

Three years on and the customarily dark follow-up, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, hits cinemas this weekend - and it's even better than the first.

Box Set Binges (VOR #18)

Quick. Send help. It's been three, maybe four, days. I don't know, time seems to be melting into thin air. Escape seems impossible. I'm starting to realise that it's me versus the TV. It's drawn me in, like the sucker that I am. Simultaneously my friend and nemesis, the DVD box set.

Rank the Films: Transformers

As any regular reader of feeling fuzzier will know, lists are pretty darn nifty. We have a profound appreciation for straight-up lists. This is the thinking behind Rank the Films, a regular feature that pulls apart the pros and cons of a series of films, ranking them in order of bad to good.

In this edition, I put the Transformers films under the microscope - from 2007's original to this week's new release, Age of Extinction. What'll come out on top? Well, read on...
