2015 WA Screen Awards - People's Choice Category

Last week I had the privilege of attending the People’s Choice Award screenings for the 27th Annual WA Screen Awards. Across three exciting nights, 22 locally produced shorts received their time in the sun courtesy of the big screen at The Backlot in West Perth, with all manner of genres accounted for.

From killer robots, to spiritual journeys of discovery, and irreverent cult comedy wannabes, the entrants covered cinematic tastes of all shapes and sizes. With the winner to be announced shortly, I took a quick look at the cream of the crop – you can view my Top 5 picks from the People’s Choice category over on Hooked on Film.

Film Review: Love & Mercy

Don’t let the sun-drenched soundtrack fool you – Love and Mercy, a biopic about Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson and his battle with schizophrenia, is so much more than just a dreamy rose-tinted blast from the past.

Interview: Greenfield

Isolation. Prejudice. The fear of being judged by others. These are just a few of the central themes that anchor Greenfield, a new West Australian web series that strives to ground itself in real life situations, and build compelling storytelling through strong characters and relationships.

Through distancing itself from spectacle, and advocating for substance instead, this gritty and hard-hitting drama centres on James (Ethan Tomas), a moody loner who moves to the titular verdant rural town in the hope of starting afresh with his girlfriend Kelly (Marthe Snorresdotter Rovik). However, it’s soon apparent that James’ city boy lifestyle doesn’t gel with the locals, and he finds himself cast out by his peers. As tensions reach boiling point, James must do everything he can to overcome his flair for causing trouble, and ‘fit in’ just as he stands to lose everything.

I recently got the chance to catch-up with the series producer Daniel James Tenni, and director Julius Telmer to chat about what inspired their much-talked about work on Greenfield. You can check out my interview with the pair by clicking here and heading over to Hooked on Film.

Rank the Films: Jurassic Park

As any regular reader of this blog will know, lists are pretty darn nifty. I have a profound appreciation for straight-up lists. This is the thinking behind Rank the Films, a regular feature that pulls apart the pros and cons of a series of films, ranking them in order of bad to good.

This month, it's time to grab your plane tickets to Isla Nublar and journey to the world of Jurassic Park, a series that has brought dinosaurs roaring into the zeitgeist since debuting in 1993. Starting with Spielberg's timeless original, and including Colin Trevorrow's shiny new release Jurassic World, I'm bringing you my verdict on the series as a whole, from worst to best.

Did your favourite reach the top? Read on to find out...

Film Review: Jurassic World

Hold onto your butts - the park is finally open and ready for business in Jurassic World, the fourth entry in the beloved 90’s franchise that redefined blockbuster cinema.

With a fresh-faced cast, up-and-coming director and some of the meanest dinosaurs this side of Tony Abbott’s cabinet, Jurassic World is a wildly entertaining thriller that’ll entertain audiences of all ages.

Film Review: Inside Out

You know those little voices that whisper away inside your head? Ever wondered what they actually, y'know, look like?

Well, meet Inside Out, the latest animation adventure from Disney Pixar, the studio behind Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Up and Ratatouille. Emotional, colourful and entertaining for all ages, Inside Out sees Pixar bounce back from a few iffy years in ruder health than ever before.

Film Review: Tomorrowland

Welcome to the world of tomorrow - today!

Tomorrowland is an original Disney science-fiction film starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie. Directed by Pixar alumni Brad Bird, it's a scatterbrained screenplay from Lost's Damon Lindelof that plagues this otherwise decent family film.

Film Review: Star Wars Ep II - Attack of the Clones

Director: George Lucas
Starring: Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Oz, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels

Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones arrived in theatres in 2002, three years after the crushing disappointment of The Phantom Menace. Advancing the plot a full decade, Clones sees a 19-year-old Anakin Skywalker begin his path towards the dark side of the Force as political rumblings escalate into all-out war.

So, 13 years on, how does Attack of the Clones stack up today?

Adult's Only 60 Second Film Reviews #2

Quick movie reviews, without the waffle. 60 Second Film Reviews is a regular feature where I compile together brief reviews of recent films I've watched at home or at the movies - and generally couldn't be arsed didn't find time to write a proper review for.

This month, we have a special 'adults only' edition, including reviews for Fifty Shades of Grey, The Wedding Ringer and The Change-Up.

Interview: Kimberley Heberley

Emotive. Passionate. Heartfelt. These are just a handful of the superlatives that follow young Aussie songstress Kimberley Heberley around whenever and wherever she performs.

A fresh-faced singer/songwriter from the sleepy suburbs of Perth, this cheery and bright-eyed songstress is steadily making a name for herself through a combination of soulful song writing, sheer talent and a savvy social media schedule that one can expect from our digitally-native generation.

I recently got chance to chat with Kimberley about representing Australia on the world stage and her plans for the future - you can read the full interview over at Avenoir Magazine. Click here to read more.
