Thoughts on SDCC 2014 #2

Nerdvana (a.k.a San Diego Comic-Con) is in full-swing this weekend and the teasers and titbits are racing around the Interwebs. Here are some more of my thoughts on some of the reveals and announcements we've seen so far.

So the big comicbook movie news came out of DC where a teaser for Batman vs. Superman was debuted. Even though it hasn't appeared online yet, there are some pretty grainy images you can unearth somewhere.

However, the actual big news was a first glimpse at Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman costume from BvS:DoJ (Yep, that's what we're shortening it to from now on). Here's the picture below:

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

No doubt a lot of naysayers will complain about the trademark Snyder washed-out colour and the fact that Gadot isn't impossibly curvy like every female comic book character, but I think she looks awesome. Sure, they've drained all the red, white and blue and replaced it with grimy bronze, gold and black but it's in keeping with the tone established in Man of Steel. Thumbs up from me!

In other news, Marvel announced that Guardians of the Galaxy (which releases here on August 7th) will be getting a sequel in 2017! Sounds like Kevin Feige and co. are pretty confident about the first film being a big hitter over the next few weeks, and I'm inclined to agree with them given the rave reviews I've been reading. 25 reviews and still 100% on Rotten Tomatoes?! I'm glad I booked my advance screening tickets...

These A-holes are getting a sequel in 2017

In other Marvel news, the big puzzle poster for Age of Ultron was finally pieced together, with posters for Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye and Quicksilver filling in the blanks. There's also a sneaky peak of Vision in the background;

Just another day in the office for the Avengers!

The Walking Dead premiered a Season 5 trailer, and even though the quality is poor, it still gets my pumped for the next string of episodes featuring Rick and co. Season 4 had its flaws (I liked it), but this trailer shows that the team are being taken in a new direction in the future (apologies if the video below doesn't work!)

We also learnt new details about the third Season of The CW's Arrow, which will feature a two-hour crossover episode with its sister show, The Flash

The CW are doubling up on superhero shows in 2014

Lastly, Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey also dropped in preview from footage from Interstellar; the duo got a big reception as the film has been super secretive throughout production. I'm considering not watching anymore trailers for this film as I kind of want to go in blind. This poster is pretty cool though, and suitably bleak as well.

So that's another quick round-up of everything that caught my interest from SDCC 2014 - there hasn't yet been a big announcement that completely brought the house down, so maybe there is something just waiting round the corner. C'mon Whedon, where's our Age of Ultron trailer!

  1. All of the DC news is giving me life!!! I think the Wonder Woman colors will be a bit nicer in the film. I think they changed the color a little in MoS after people started bitching. But her shin guards!!! I love them!!! They make her look extra badass.
I saw some grainy footage of the clip from B vs S, and it looks amazing!!! I can't wait for the official release!!!

As far as Marvel goes, I just don't really give a shit. They are way too comical for my likening. I love the seriousness that DC is giving out. I've always preferred DC to Marvel. They just have better superheroes and villains(my opinion of course).

    1. That's really interesting because I kind of agree - don't get me wrong, I love Marvel's approach to bits, but I also sort of prefer the DC universe anyway - Arkham, Injustice, Arrow - there's been a lot of cool new properties tied to DC recently.

I still think Marvel has a place though - personally, Avengers is my favourite comicbook movie, ever. Sorry Nolan :P Thanks for commenting!

    1. They've certainly brought out the big guns! It was good to see Affleck, Cavill and Gadot all up on stage together. I'll reserve judgement until that first Age of Ultron trailer I think ;)

  3. I wish that Avengers 2 trailer would show up online, the descriptions of the footage sound great. The new Interstellar trailer is not very spoilery.
